Student Evaluations: One of the Best Ways to Grow Musically

Having students take more ownership and responsibility in performance and improvement should be a primary goal in any music ensemble. In the marching band and the concert band this is essential to continued growth for the ensemble. Certainly student leadership is one way to cultivate ownership and responsibility. A second way where all students can have input is student evaluation of performances.
The simplest method for this can occur following a show, concert or competition by creating a basic form on which the front of a sheet of paper the students are to list two or three items of the performance that went well, and more importantly, list the reason(s) they believe as to why that item went well. On the back side of the sheet have students list two or three items of the performance that need improvement, and again, more importantly, list ways in which the ensemble can achieve that improvement.
It is important to share all of this information with the students. Collate the responses into a single document. It is best if it is organized from the most frequent comments to the least. This can take a little time, but will serve the ensemble very well. The students have a unique perspective as a member within the ensemble. They see the issues positive and negative in ways that the leadership cannot see or hear. As a director, I am always impressed by the input and by some of the unique suggestions for how to help the ensemble improve and grow. Over the years I have learned and used many new techniques for ensemble improvement that were student suggestions.
