The recorder is a powerful tool for notation instruction, as well as a fun and satisfying vehicle for young children’s self-expression. I teach recorder throughout the school year, rather than as an isolated unit. The curriculum includes lots of rote playing, in addition to the music reading lessons. I have found that this inexpensive and motivational tool quickly grows young music-readers!
I use the Recorder Express method book to provide a comprehensive and enjoyable curriculum to the students. I’m pleased to tell you that Recorder Express is now available in an amazing electronic format on SmartMusic. This easy-to-use digital resource will energize your recorder teaching! And you don’t need to be a techno-wizard with this user-friendly program.
I love using the SmartMusic version of Recorder Express with my classes. It makes my job easier, and the children enjoy the digital features and are very engaged in the lessons. I have a laptop computer attached to a projector, which provides a nice, large image of the musical exercises and tunes. The index is always displayed and easy to scroll through, making it possible to access any piece in the 48-page book in seconds.
SmartMusic gives you many options for instruction. A green bar runs across the music, showing students which beat they are on at all times. This is fabulous for helping young children to track accurately and develop downbeat awareness. Another favorite feature of mine is the “Tempo Slider Bar,” which allows you to choose any tempo for any exercise. My students enjoy starting at a slow tempo and playing a tune three or four times, at increasingly difficult tempi.
